Beat The Winter Blues With A Staycation

The holidays are over and the temperature is falling.  Some days it seems like even a pot of coffee can’t get you out of bed never mind through the day.  And speaking of days, they are shorter and darker.

As someone who struggles with depression, I’ve had to find ways to help me beat the Winter Blues and make it through till the summer heat.  The following are a few tips that have helped me and I’m sure will assist you as well.

6 TIPS TO BEAT THE WINTER BLUES

Vitamin D and Light.

Sunlight has positive health effects, as it is both a principal source of vitamin D3. UV exposure also has positive effects on endorphin levels.  With daylight in short supply, an artificial light for just 30 minutes a day can provide what your body is craving.  And when the sun is out, open the blinds and curtains and try sitting close to the windows.

Watch What You Eat.

We already know that healthy foods are better for you but did you know that the other stuff can actually make your moods worse?  Sure chocolate can help relieve anxiety and sugar can give you a feeling of euphoria, but all are temporary.  In fact, they actually increase feelings of anxiety and depression.

Exercise.

Walking fast for about 35 minutes a day five times a week or 60 minutes a day three times a week can improve symptoms of mild to moderate depression. Being cold outside means more indoor activities which can be better.  A preliminary study found that exercise under bright light improved general mental health, social functioning, depressive symptoms, and vitality, while exercise in ordinary light improved vitality only.

Longing for sunnier days at the beach? Research shows that the simple act of planning a vacation causes a significant increase in overall happiness.  Or take a short staycation to a local hotel for that feeling of a getaway.

This last suggestion is something my family and I took advantage of this past week.  Due to a business meeting a few hours from home, we used this as a chance for a night’s stay in the area.  Both kids were extremely excited about sleeping in a hotel and the chance to swim in a pool.  We even were able to save (aka. FREE) by using Marriott points.

We stayed at The Courtyard Marriott in Wallingford which is just outside of West Haven.  The staff really tries to be sure you’re enjoying your home away from home.

The Courtyard New Haven Wallingford is perfect for both business and leisure.  There are several event rooms and boardrooms to accommodate your needs.

And speaking of connected, did we mention the free Wi-Fi?  All guests can log on easily and at no cost.  DIVA, of course, took full advantage of this feature.

But as a family, we like to take advantage of the suites.  The Courtyard New Haven Wallingford has 12 Suites available.  The suite gives you a living room area with plenty of seating, TV, work desk and kitchenette.

One way to cut costs with eating out is having a kitchenette which includes a microwave, small refrigerator, and personal coffee station.  Keriug is my lifeline.

Didn’t bring snacks?  No worries.  The 24 Hour Marketplace has a wide variety of snacks, drinks (even the adult kind) and even toiletries.
