About ALADDIN The Tour
ALADDIN, adapted from the animated Disney film and centuries-old folktales including “One Thousand and One Nights,” is brought to fresh theatrical life in this bold new musical. Aladdin’s journey sweeps audiences into an exotic world of daring adventure, classic comedy, and a timeless romance. This new production features a full score, including the five cherished songs from the Academy Award-winning soundtrack and more written especially for the stage.
Produced by Disney Theatrical Productions, under the direction of Thomas Schumacher, the show features music by Tony Award and eight-time Oscar® winner Alan Menken (Beauty and the Beast, Newsies, Sister Act), lyrics by two-time Oscar winner Howard Ashman (Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid), three-time Tony Award and three-time Oscar winner Tim Rice (Evita, Aida) and six-time Tony Award nominee Chad Beguelin (The Wedding Singer), with a book by Beguelin, and is directed and choreographed by Tony Award-winner Casey Nicholaw (The Book of Mormon).
ALADDIN opened on Broadway at the New Amsterdam Theatre to critical acclaim on March 20, 2014, and quickly established itself as one of the biggest new blockbusters in recent years, breaking 14 New Amsterdam Theatre house records; worldwide it has welcomed more than 10 million people and grossed over $1 billion. Its global footprint includes productions in Tokyo, Germany and on tour across North America.
Our Interview With Aladdin’s Reggie De Leon
As the National Tour of ALADDIN prepares to open at the Providence Performing Arts Center, we were able to ask one of their cast members some questions about the show itself and life on the road. Reggie De Leon plays Iago, Jafar’s sidekick but we are told to not expect the movie version of a bird. Hear what Reggie shared about his role and more.
How did you get your start in the arts?
I always had a love for singing and dancing, so I joined a performing group when I was 16 years-old that performed at local malls and other fun venues like Disneyland! One of my friends in the group told me about a production of The King & I for which she was going to be auditioning, so I decided to join her and was cast as ‘Prince Chululongkorn.” I got bit pretty bad by the acting bug then and have been looking for stages to perform on ever since!
Describe your character in ALADDIN in one sentence:
Iago is not a bird in this production.
What made you want to audition for this show?
I had several friends tell me after seeing Aladdin on Broadway that when they were watching Don Darryl Rivera, the amazing actor who originated the role of “Iago,” they thought they were watching me! So with their encouragement, I just had to audition!
If you had an opportunity to get three wishes from a genie, what would they be?
I know this sounds cheesy, but honestly, world peace! Second, I’d wish for happiness, good health, and prosperity for my loved ones. And third, I’d wish to be able to keep working as an actor in the hopes of bringing a little bit of joy to people!
What’s your favorite song from this production?
“Proud of Your Boy,” the tender, heartfelt ballad “Aladdin” sings to his mother. The melody is gorgeous, and the lyrics are so touching. I have a very close relationship with my mom so the song expresses a sentiment I hold close to my heart.
What is the most important thing you learned about yourself while touring with ALADDIN?
I’m lucky enough to have my wife and our sweet pup Max on the road with me, so I’ve learned that all I need to be happy is to be with them!
With now 3 ways to enjoy Disney’s story of ALADDIN, which is your favorite?
I love all three, but if I had to choose, I’d definitely pick the stage production! There’s nothing like experiencing this story we all know and love, live and in person!
How would you describe life on the road?
Life on the road is a great big wonderful adventure where I get to indulge my two favorite past times – travel and trying new restaurants!
Is there a dream role you want to maybe tackle someday?
My dream is to originate a role someday but to pick one from the existing canon, I would love to play “Seymour” in Little Shop of Horrors!
As the DIVA wants to pursue a theater career, any advice for her and our young readers who want to pursue a career in musical theater?
Seek and seize every opportunity you can to study and get on stage! There are so many wonderful programs out there, so find one in your area and get involved!
