WHY MENTAL HEALTH IS SO IMPORTANT
Here at the Autism Diva, I have shared not only how society has and continues to improve in how mental health is viewed and support given. You can read some of these in Mental Health In Women, Caregivers and Their Personal Wellbeing, and even Suicide Prevention Month. I have also been open about my own personal struggles with depression.
Your mental health influences and controls just about everything in your life from how you think to how you feel and even how you behave each day. It also affects your ability to cope with stress, overcome challenges, recover from setbacks, build relationships, and perform well at work and school. It truly affects everything. That is why it is so important to learn how to take care of your mental health.
WHAT IS GOOD MENTAL HEALTH?
According to Help Guide, Mental health refers to your overall psychological well-being. It encompasses the way you feel about yourself, the quality of your relationships, and your ability to manage your feelings and deal with difficulties.
Strong mental health isn’t just the absence of mental health problems. Being mentally or emotionally healthy is much more than being free of depression, anxiety, or other psychological issues. Rather than the absence of mental illness, mental health refers to the presence of positive characteristics.
People who are mentally healthy have:
- A sense of contentment
- A zest for living and the ability to laugh and have fun.
- The ability to deal with stress and bounce back from adversity.
- A sense of meaning and purpose, in both their activities and their relationships.
- The flexibility to learn new skills and adapt to change.
- A balance between work and play, rest and activity, etc.
- The ability to build and maintain fulfilling relationships.
- Self-confidence and high self-esteem.
These positive characteristics of mental and emotional health allow you to participate in life to the fullest extent possible. This is with productive, meaningful activities and strong relationships. These positive characteristics also help you cope when faced with life’s challenges and stresses.”
These are just some of the reasons why you need to take care of your mental health, so that you can be mentally healthy, in order to live your best life. Here are a few ways to help you when it comes to taking care of your mental health:
LIVE A CLEAN LIFESTYLE
There are many aspects involved when it comes to living a clean lifestyle. For starters, you need to eat healthily. The food that you put in your body directly affects the way that you function, including your brain. If you load up on carbs and sugar, you will more than likely feel okay at first, but then you will end up crashing later in the day, which can lead to lower self-esteem and mental health, in general.
Getting enough exercise is also a key component when it comes to living a clean lifestyle! The mind and the body are intrinsically linked. So when you improve your physical health, you also improve your mental health. Working out releases endorphins which can help lift up your mood and increase energy. They have also been linked to lower levels of stress, improved memory, and better (and more) sleep. In addition to that, the better you think you look, the better you will feel about yourself, as well.
Last but not least, I would highly recommend removing toxins from your life. According to Brain MD, “Toxins can and do negatively affect every part of the body. Toxic effects on the brain include poor memory and concentration, erratic behavior, word confusion, mood issues, headaches, vertigo, and cravings. Toxic brain exposures, as from alcohol abuse, are also linked to accelerated mental decline.” There are toxins everywhere, but if you remove and replace one product at a time, you are on your way to living a cleaner life and hopefully improving your mental health along with it.

SURROUND YOURSELF WITH POSITIVE PEOPLE
You are who you surround yourself with. This becomes more and more apparent with every single day that passes. If you spend time with people who complain, you will end up complaining along with them. Alternatively, if you spend time with people who raise each other up, thrive on happiness, and have a great perspective on life (like the glass half full idea), you will think this way, as well and that will significantly boost your mental health.
To stay healthy, we need to find help when we start to feel unwell. The same is true for mental health. Mental health problems are easier to care for when they are caught quickly. If you are feeling unwell and nothing seems to help, it is important to talk to your doctor or counselor.
