During Spring Break, I teamed up with a fellow blogger and friend and we took the kids to visit Chattanooga as it’s only a few hours from Atlanta, GA. After spending the earlier part of the day at Ruby Falls, we later stopped at Incline Railway.
about incline railway
As one of the steepest passenger railways in the world, The Incline Railway, located on Lookout Mountain, has delighted guests for more than a century as “America’s Most Amazing Mile.” The Incline’s trolley-style cars climb through the natural beauty surrounding historic Lookout Mountain at a breathtaking 72.7% grade allowing you to enjoy the scenic views of the mountains and valleys from the observation windows on the train.
There are two cars and two stations, one on the top of the mountain and one at the bottom. We started at the top with Lookout Mountain Station since we were already up. There was a 30 minute + wait till our boarding time so we took advantage of the amazing views of the Chattanooga Valley from the observation deck. Just a few blocks over many points of Civil War interest, the Battles for Chattanooga Electric Map & Museum and Point Park, part of the Chickamauga -Chattanooga National Military Park system.
Riding the Incline
When we first boarded for our ride down, it was a bit strange as the seats are titled. But once the car starts it’s decent, you feel like your sitting straight vs. facing the ground. Passengers are able to get panoramic views of the Tennessee Valley as the car is surrounded by glass. During the ride, you also learn the history of the Incline and Lookout Mountain includes Civil War battles, rivalries, and grand hotels.
We arrived at St Elmo station at the bottom in 15 minutes. Once there, we explored as you can find a collection of unique shops, restaurants, and attractions. Some of the things you’ll find are microbrewery tours, fresh flowers, homemade candle making, unique coffee, indoor climbing wall, fresh-made burritos, outdoor local dining, hand-dipped ice cream, nostalgic clothing or relax with a massage. Of course, the kids wanted Ice Cream and Clumpies is a ‘Must-Try’ so that was where we spend most of our time before heading back to the top.
Come see for yourself why the Incline is one of the most fun things to do in Chattanooga!
