Old Is New Again With SOLO: A Star Wars Story
A free advanced screening was provided for purpose of this review. All opinions and thoughts are my own.
You may have heard about the newest installment of the Star Wars franchise. Instead of going forward with the story, we travel back and see how some of our favorite characters got their start. I’m talking about SOLO: A Star Wars Story.
Board the Millennium Falcon and journey to a galaxy far, far away in SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY, an all-new adventure with the most beloved scoundrel in the galaxy. Through a series of daring escapades deep within a dark and dangerous criminal underworld, Han Solo befriends his mighty future copilot Chewbacca and meets the notorious gambler Lando Calrissian, in a journey that will set the course of one of the Star Wars saga’s most unlikely heroes. The film stars Alden Ehrenreich, Woody Harrelson, Emilia Clarke, Donald Glover, Thandie Newton, Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Paul Bettany.
I’ve got to admit, I had low expectations for this movie. I went in wanting to dislike it, and boy was I wrong. As someone who has worried about the Star Wars franchise getting overly milked like a Thala-siren, I was quite surprised to find myself enjoying the movie as much as I did. I thought the storyline itself was more than good enough for a standalone movie, and if you’ve never watched Star Wars you could still thoroughly enjoy watching this without feeling lost or confused. The cast was superb. Donald Glover is an excellent choice for Lando, and even though Alden Ehrenreich doesn’t bare any real likeness to Harrison Ford he nailed his mannerism and speech patterns. He’s definitely young Solo to me now.
I took my son (who is a 14-year-old Patton Oswald when it comes to knowing all things Star Wars) and not only did he like the movie as much as I did, but he actually sat there and watched it without once telling me what was wrong or inaccurate. He even admitted to not seeing one of the plot twists in the movie.
I definitely think any fan of Star Wars will, even if begrudgingly, really like this movie, I will definitely be seeing this one again and again.
