The fourth installment in Robert Beatty’s #1 New York Times bestselling middle-grade series, Serafina And The Seven Stars, was released this July. Amazon is filled with five-star reviews, easily making it a best-seller in several categories including literature and fiction, and mysteries.
I stumbled across the Serafina series per an ad with Disney Harpoon Books who is the publishing company of these fantasy series. Upon reading a request for reviews of Serafina and the Black Cloak, I reached out to Mr. Robert Beatty and was sent an autographed copy and I was hooked! I can not get enough of these stories and anxiously await updates on Mr. Beatty’s social pages.
With the success of the Serafina series, Robert Beatty has done book tours and we were able to attend a stop for his second release, Serafina And The Twisted Staff. What I remember most about speaking with Mr. Beatty is talking about his amazing book trailers which are like movies in themselves. I inquired if there were any possible talk about a movie deal with Disney since they are the publishing company. While there is still no updates to share, yes there are negotiations going on.
About The Serafina Series
As I mentioned there are currently four books in the series. Each book continues with Serafina’s tale or finding her place, her purpose, and who she truly is.
Serafina And The Black Cloak
Serafina and the Black Cloak is an exciting book from Disney Hyperion about an unusual girl who lives secretly in the basement of the grand Biltmore Estate. Serafina has strange amber eyes, a mane of streaked, lion-like hair, and other peculiar characteristics. Her pa has warned her to keep herself hidden from the fancy folk above, so she prowls through the darkened corridors at night, sneaking through the hidden doors and secret passageways of the vast house. The night is her domain and hers alone. But one night, she sees a sinister stranger in a black cloak capture a little girl. When other children at the estate start disappearing, Serafina faces a difficult decision: Should she step out into the light to save these children? Should she risk everything by approaching the young Vanderbilt boy? To defeat her black-cloaked enemy, Serafina must not only confront her darkest fears, but she must also delve into the mysteries of her own identity.
Serafina and the Twisted Staff
Serafina finds herself caught between two worlds: she’s too wild for Biltmore estate’s beautifully dressed ladies and formal customs and too human to fully join her forest kin. Then, late one night, she encounters a strange and terrifying figure and is attacked by the vicious wolfhounds under his control. Even worse, she’s convinced that the stranger is not alone, and he has sent his accomplice into Biltmore in disguise.
A mysterious series of attacks test Serafina’s role as Biltmore’s protector, culminating in a tragedy that tears Serafina’s best friend from her side. Heartbroken, she flees. Deep in the forest, she comes face to face with the evil infecting Biltmore and discovers its reach is far greater than she’d ever imagined. All the humans and animals of the Blue Ridge Mountains are in terrible danger. For Serafina to defeat this new evil before it engulfs her beloved home, she must search deep inside herself and embrace the destiny that has always awaited her.
Serafina and the Splintered Heart
The storms are coming… Something has happened to Serafina. She has awoken into a darkness she does not understand, scarred from a terrible battle, only to find that life at Biltmore Estate has changed in unimaginable ways. Old friends do unthinkable things and enemies seem all around.
A mysterious threat moves towards Biltmore, a force without a name, bringing with it violent storms and flooding that stands to uproot everything in its path. Serafina must uncover the truth about what has happened to her and find a way to harness her strange new powers before it’s too late.
With only days to achieve the impossible, Serafina fights to reclaim herself as the Guardian of Biltmore, friend of Braeden, daughter of her Pa, and heroine of the Blue Ridge Mountains and all the folk and creatures that call it home.
Serafina and the Seven Stars
Serafina, the Guardian of Biltmore Estate, has won battle after battle against the dark forces encroaching on her home. Now, tranquility has returned to Biltmore. Serafina doesn’t trust it. She patrols the grounds night and day, hardly sleeping, uncertain of her place after her best friend Braeden Vanderbilt’s departure for boarding school in New York. When Mr. Vanderbilt, the kind master of Biltmore, asks Serafina to move upstairs into one of the house’s grandest rooms, she’s sure it’s to keep an eye on the guests who have arrived for the estate’s annual hunt. But as Serafina investigates, she becomes more and more unsettled by what Biltmore has become—a place haunted by nameless terrors where no dark corridor is safe. Even worse, she begins to doubt her own senses. Is Braeden really hundreds of miles away, or did he return to Biltmore for one strange night before vanishing? Is the bond between them truly broken or is it stronger than ever? Then Serafina witnesses a crime that turns her world upside down. How can all that once seemed good and worthy of protection now be evil? And how can she guard those around her when she can’t even be sure of the truth of her own heart?
With each book, Mr. Beatty gets better and better. You are drawn in with the first paragraph. The details in his writing allow you to picture the story perfectly in your mind. With each chapter, you want more.
The stories are written in a manner that younger readers will enjoy but also filled with enough mystery and adventure that adults will fall in love with Serafina too. I literally throw myself into his books and complete them within a few days.
In between the last two books of the series, Mr. Beatty introduced a new heroin and released Willia of The Woods. Willia’s story also takes place in the Smoky Mountains and we have been told that the two heroines stories with cross. If fact in Willa of the Woods there is a moment where I believe that did in fact happen. It is not outright mentioned in the story, but if you are familiar with Serafina then you will know it is her.
