WHY I’M CRAZY
Yup, I’m crazy. All of us in the autism community are. We must be. For the powers that be are saying we are. Who are these powers that be you ask. The legislators here in GA. You see, there is a bill before the house called Ava’s Law or HB 309. It is an Autism Reform bill to help every child with autism receive insurance coverage. GA is one of the few states that does not require insurance to cover autism related care. No therapies, no ABA, nothing.
Just as this bill was gaining momentum, Senator Golden is saying Back to study Committee. Representatives with ties in Insurance companies are stating that there is not enough evidence to show that these services are beneficial. That $.32 cents a day is not justified.
32 CENTS IS NOT JUSTIFIED
So how does the crazy play in? Well, if .32 cents is not a justified expense how in anyone’s right mind would they want to spend more? We in the autism community spend more than that. Way more! Let me give you just one example.
The Marcus Autism Center. They’re crazy. For they specialize in ABA therapy. A therapy according to the Insurance Reps does not help. They are non-profit, so they do not make money off providing these services that do not help. Yup, have to be crazy. But wait! There is so much more. So not only do they not make money, deal with non-helping therapies, but they try to give scholarships and get support via fund raisers. So much money on crazy. But this goes from crazy to what the insurance must think is insane by their conclusions. Insane? Yes, for the Marcus Autism Center was just awarded in September an $8.3 million grant from the National Institutes of Health. $8.3 million dollars people! For research and a company that deals in therapy that doesn’t work! Forget insane, that’s just ludicrous!
WERE BEHIND IT JUST MONTHS AGO
Governor Nathan Deal was so proud to make that grant announcement back in September. So why now, here just 5 months later is he allowing this life changing bill to be pushed back? Why would Rep Renee Unterman who’s owe page reads “Throughout her service of 22 years as a public servant on the local and state government level, Renee Unterman has focused on health and social law, consumer issues, and has given special attention to the young and vulnerable, as well as the elderly citizens of Georgia. With each legislative session, Sen. Unterman has championed legislation that has sought to end the commercial sexual exploitation of children. She continues to fight for a change in Georgia law and policy that will allow children to be assessed, receive therapeutic services, and be given the opportunity to have a normal, successful life.” And then yet yesterday made the comment if she had to pay $100,00 for her own child’s therapy so should they. How is that for the vulnerable, our young? If you are true to your own words, than you should be for the bill not against.
But I guess I’m crazy. We as a community are crazy. We must be because otherwise, this just doesn’t make sense.
And FYI….I dare anyone of these so called Representatives (for they sure don’t represent me) look my 4 year old in the eye and say your not worth $.32
