How To Create A Family Game Room On A Budget
We hear more about holding a family game night these days. Have you ever wondered why? Just walk down the street today and you will be greeted by swarms of people all staring at their phones. Not a “hello.” Go into the house of a family with children and you will see them all on their iPads, iPhones, computers, or behind the TV. Don’t’ even try to ask how their day was. Go to the doctor office and instead of people starting conversations with others, you will see them hiding behind their phones talking with people on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and other social media apps.
Technology: The Good & The Bad
Now don’t get me wrong. All this technology can be very beneficial. Even schools have taken advantage of this technology and we now have a better education. But when is it enough? It is now getting hard to go have coffee with someone and actually have a face to face conversation. Some feel why bother to get together as you already know what’s going on as you’re always digitally connected.
The same goes for kids – you don’t see them playing outside, or playing games (physical games) anymore. Instead, you see them playing on their phones, iPads, and computers as I mentioned above. This needs to change, in my opinion, at least a small amount. I truly think that we should balance our time. Set some time away from the screens and creating more memories.
A family game room is just one small way that I am trying to do that in my home. In fact, much of the technology can be used in a beneficial way to enhance the family game room experience. If you want to try this out as well, here are a few ways to create a family game room on a budget:
Comfortable seating is the very first thing you should look into when designing your family game room. You need enough seating for well, a family. And possibly friends as well. You want everyone to feel relaxed and want to stay in this space. So make sure the couch and/or chars are very comfortable. A good recommendation is a table with chairs for smaller games, a couch that can seat a good amount of people, and then having a lot of open floor space as well.
A Kitchen or Bar
If your family game room is in the basement (or upstairs), who wants to run all over the place to get snacks and drinks? Not me! Make it convenient by adding a kitchen, or a small bar area downstairs, where you can store drinks, snacks, and other treats. Even a small dorm style fridge can be a great addition. Your kids, friends and even yourself will thank you.
Games are essential when it comes to a family room, and especially a family game room. While this may seem obvious, many wonder just what sort of games to have? The goal is to connect with each other. Maybe even challenge your brain too. Games such as cards, jenga, monopoly, etc. are always good to have on hand. And for the big games, I highly recommend getting a pool table. It’s a great social activity and it’s a great game for your kids to learn at a young age!
I know this sounds like it would be really pricey, but full-service billiard company, Absolute Billiard Services, which is located in the Atlanta, GA area where they sell new and used pool tables, making it a lot more affordable. They also move, recover, assemble, disassemble, calibrate, and repair all makes and models of pool tables – even antiques. Music can really set the mood. We almost always have something playing in the background. And it’s very simple to have everyone’s taste covered with home devices like Alexa or Google Home. Just say hey, play this artist, song or genre; and it’s an instant party. Speaking of parties, why not make a dance party and get everyone moving?
Do you have a TV in your game room? How about a Movie Night? Add Surround Sound and enhance the viewing experience similar to going out to the theatre.
A Gaming System
Hear me out on this one – yes, I just said that we have too much screen time. But some screen time can be good when done right. What I mean in a gaming system is not Fortnight or any of those games. I am talking about Wii games or other games that will force to interact with live people. The Wii Sport games and dance games are not only so much fun, but they also help you get active too!
When you start your own Game Room, take one thing at a time. Build up slowly and for more money savings, consider buying used/consignment options. The goal isn’t to have the latest in technology but a place where the whole family with want to spend time together.
